The store serves as the local grocer for our small community and is the perfect stop-off to stock up on food and personal items before making your way south to Franz Josef Glacier or north to Hokitika.

Whataroa is home to about 250 permanent residents made up mostly of a farming community. Local facilities and businesses in our little township include a community hall, service and petrol station, school, playground, a great second-hand shop, the White Heron Sanctuary Tours, Glacier Country Motel, Glacier Country Scenic Flights, and The Lonely Stag Cafe & Store.
As the only business offering food in a social setting with shared and booth dining options in Whataroa, naturally, our space serves as a local hub, a space where people come together to catch up over good food & coffee. On a daily basis, it makes our hearts full to see locals mixing and mingling with visitors from all corners of the world in our little cafe. It's a great vibe and we can't wait to welcome you!

Whataroa is part of Glacier Country which is made up of a small series of intimate towns and communities scattered along South Westland on the West Coast of New Zealand nestled between the great Southern Alps and Tasman Ocean. From Hari Hari, Whataroa, Franz Josef Glacier, Okarito, Fox Glacier, and Lake Paringa all the way down to Haast. Why is this area called Glacier Country? Because you don't have to venture far into the mountains to find our precious glaciers. There are lots of ways to see them and it's worth staying a night in Whataroa to explore our slice of Glacier Country.
